CUTR: FSC certification development in Russia - 2011.
Russia contains more than one-five of the world's forests. These are the riches in biodiversity and play an important role in climate change mitigation. Meaning that responsible management of Russian forests is important on a global scale.
A further five million hectares of forest became FSC certified during in 2011.
The total certified area now stands at 29 million hectares, making Russia in second position in the world ranking after Canada.
Almost 700,000 hectares of forests were excluded from logging because of FSC certification requirements.
Health, remuneration, safety and other social benefits were seen to be higher with FSC certified companies in Russia as compared to non-certified companies.
A national FSC membership program was running in December 2011, to give better opportunities to serve the needs of FSC clients.
